How to Use a Seine Net: The Complete Guide

Seine nets are one of the most effective tools for catching large quantities of baitfish in shallow water. Unlike cast nets — which you throw and retrieve solo — seine nets are typically worked by two people along a shoreline, encircling bait schools in a sweeping motion. Here’s everything you need to know to use one effectively.
What Is a Seine Net?
A seine net (pronounced “sayn”) is a long, rectangular net with floats along the top edge and weights along the bottom. When deployed, it hangs vertically in the water like a curtain, with the floatline keeping the top at the surface and the leadline holding the bottom against the bottom. Seine nets are measured in length (typically 10–50 ft) and depth (mesh height), rather than radius like cast nets.
When to Use a Seine Net vs. a Cast Net
Use a seine net when: You’re fishing in very shallow water (ankle to knee-deep), bait is spread out along a wide stretch of shoreline, you have a partner available to work both ends, or you need to catch a large volume of bait quickly.
Use a cast net when: You’re fishing solo, bait is schooled in a tight pod, you’re fishing from a boat or elevated position (dock, bridge), or you need precision targeting.
How to Use a Seine Net: Step-by-Step
Spot your bait. Look for surface disturbances, nervous water, or visible baitfish along a shallow flat, beach, or grass edge. Approach slowly and quietly — bait schools spook easily.
Position your team. One person holds each end of the seine (or one person holds one end while the other wades out). Start with the net spread out parallel to the shoreline, with the lead line touching the bottom.
Encircle the school. The person on the outside sweeps their end in a wide arc, moving around and behind the school while the person on the inside stays near shore. Move smoothly and steadily — quick movements push bait out from under the net.
Close the net. Once both ends meet toward shore, lift the lead line off the bottom while pulling both ends together to trap the bait. Move toward shallower water to beach the catch.
Retrieve your bait. Use a dip net or bait bucket to transfer fish from the seine to your livewell or bait bucket. Work quickly to minimize stress on the bait.
Choosing the Right Seine Net Size
10–20 ft seine: Good for 1–2 person operation in very shallow water. Easy to manage and ideal for beginners.
25–50 ft seine: Better coverage, requires 2 people and some coordination. Ideal for open shoreline with scattered bait.
Mesh size: 1/4" for very small bait (glass minnows, fry), 3/8" for most common baits (shiners, small mullet, pinfish).
