Commercial Cast Nets: What Serious Anglers Need to Know

If you’re catching bait professionally, guiding clients, or simply fishing hard enough that a consumer net wears out in a season, it’s time to look at commercial-grade cast nets. Here’s what separates a commercial net from a standard one — and what to look for when you’re ready to make the upgrade.

What Makes a Cast Net “Commercial Grade”?

Commercial cast nets are built to withstand heavy, repeated use in demanding conditions. The key differences from consumer nets come down to four things:

  • Heavier lead per foot. Commercial nets typically run 1.0–1.5 lb of lead per foot of radius, compared to 0.75–1.0 lb for consumer nets. Heavier lead means faster sinking, which is critical when you need the net to close before fast-moving baitfish escape underneath.

  • Heavier-gauge mesh. Commercial nets use thicker mesh material that withstands repeated throws, rocky bottoms, and the abrasion of heavy lead lines far better than lighter consumer mesh.

  • Larger radius. Commercial nets commonly range from 8–14 ft, maximizing coverage per throw for anglers who need volume.

  • Reinforced horn and lead line connections. The high-stress connection points on a commercial net are built to handle thousands of throws without failing.

BasicGear Commercial Series: What’s Available

BasicGear’s Commercial Series nets are built for anglers who throw daily. The lineup includes standard commercial nets and the Pancake Premium series, which features a flat disc lead system instead of individual weights. The pancake design sinks the net in an even, flat circle — giving bait virtually no time or gap to escape before the net closes.

  • Pancake Premium Cast Net (1.25 lb/ft): Best for high-volume bait catching in open water. Fast, flat, even sink every throw.

  • Standard Commercial Series (1.0 lb/ft): Great all-around commercial net for guides and frequent anglers. Available in multiple mesh sizes from 3/8” to 3/4”.

Who Should Buy a Commercial Net?

You don’t have to fish commercially to benefit from a commercial-grade net. Consider upgrading if any of these apply to you:

  • You throw your net more than 3–4 times per week.

  • You’re targeting fast, evasive bait like pogies or large mullet that escape before consumer nets fully close.

  • You fish in deep water (8 ft+) where faster sinking lead is necessary to reach bait before it scatters.

  • Your current net is wearing out faster than you’d like.
